Glasgow City v Hibernian – Match Preview – SWPL 1

New Douglas Park, Sunday 1st May 2016, Kick-Off: 4pm

This will be Tartan Kicks’ Featured Match

The top two sides in the SWPL 1 meet at New Douglas Park, in a game that was anticipated before the season even began, and the respective club’s form haven’t let us down. Five points separate the two clubs, although that is mainly down to Hibs playing one game less, although the Edinburgh side has also dropped points in a goalless draw with Aberdeen.

Last season, these two sides met five times across all three domestic competitions – and each time, it was a blockbuster event. The first two league encounters were pulsating 3-3 draws, with the game’s balance twisting and turning, with late drama in both. Whilst the third was a 2-0 win to City, Hibs had their chances with the ball cleared off the City line and the Edinburgh side hitting the woodwork.

And in the 2015 SWP League Cup Final, Hibs pushed City all the way and until Kerry Montgomery’s 77th-minute equaliser looked like they would win the cup. They also met in the Scottish Cup Final which City won 3-0 thanks to Clare Shine’s hat-trick.

City’s start to the league had been more subdued than normal, although they continued to pick up wins, just not in the free-scoring manner we are used to. But in the past two games, they have found the net 12 times and go into today’s clash full of confidence.

As do Hibernian, who last week survived a comeback to beat Celtic. They had gone 3-0 up, thanks to a blistering start, but Celtic grew into the game and scored twice to set up a nervy finish. Apart from that draw with Aberdeen, Hibs had won their other two matches both by 3-1 scorelines.

Glasgow City will remain in first, regardless of the result whilst Hibernian could drop down to fourth with a defeat.
