The home side had started incredibly, and after two games, they found themselves top of the SWPL 1 table after beating Aberdeen and Forfar Farmington. But since then, they have lost 5-1 to Aberdeen in the SWP League Cup Quarter-Final, 1-0 to Rangers in a league game where they missed a first-half penalty and last Wednesday, they lost 8-0 to Glasgow City. That thrashing by City was the first defeat they had at Ainslie Park in 2016.

Spartans are in the group of teams where you can easily see them fighting for a top four place or battling against relegation, such is the distribution of quality outside the top three sides. And whilst Stirling University are below them in the table, they are a side that continues to impress the neutrals.

Their season, in terms of results, had begun badly – being knocked out of the League Cup in the First Round and then losing their first two league games. But when you restrict Glasgow City to a single goal, you know that there is something impressive about the side. And Tartan Kicks was there to witness the moment when this was shown in terms of results.

Celtic had travelled to Stirling University on the back of a historic 5-1 win over Rangers, played at Celtic Park. And when they took a 1-0 lead late on against Stirling, you would have been reasonable to expect the Glasgow side would go on to secure the three points. But Stirling didn’t feel sorry for themselves and came back to stun Celtic with a 2-1 victory.

This is not the first time these sides have met this season, with Spartans beating Stirling 5-1, after extra time, in the SWP League Cup First Round. At full-time the score was 1-1, and Stirling was unlucky to lose, having a goal ruled out controversially early on in extra-time.

Spartans can move up to second with a win, whilst Spartans could climb up to third if they win.
