Rangers Sign Niamh Johnston From Celtic

Rangers have announced the signing of defender Niamh Johnston from their league rivals Celtic.

This will be her second spell with the Gers, having spent her youth career with them. The former Scotland Under-17 international, told the Rangers’ website that she had left Celtic after being played out of position for over a year, saying:

I enjoyed probably my most successful time in my cacreer at this club and have always been fond of the set up and the coaches so being back as a first team player is terrific.

After her time Celtic, Johnston will reuinted with her ex-Celtic team-mate Rhonda Jones, but due to the numerous changes in the Rangers’ squad, she will have to get to used to her new teammates. In fact, Jones is the only player Johnston has played with in senior football, although she has played with Claire Adams and Chantelle Brown in youth football.

She has praised the training and atmopshere at Rangers, and is now looking forward to possibly making her debut this Sunday, away to Aberdeen.

Although Aberdeen currently sit in seventh place in the SWPL 1, Johnston is aware of the challenges they pose, telling Rangers’ website:

As for Sunday if you ask any player in the league they will probably agree Aberdeen away from home is one of the toughest fixtures, I’m feeling confident though.

Aberdeen’s only point in the season has been at home when they held Hibernian to a goalless draw, the only time the Edinburgh side have dropped points.

After Glasgow City’s 8-0 win over Spartans, Rangers now find themselves in fourth place going into Sunday and will be wanting to build upon their impressive win over Spartans last weekend.
