Rangers became the first side to beat Spartans in the SWPL 1 as they fought to a narrow 1-0 win at a blustery New Tinto Park.
Rangers had the better of the opening exchanges, with Chantelle Brown shooting wide and Lisa Swanson and Brown having efforts blocked by the Spartans’ defence.
In the 14th minute, they came even closer as Katey Turner saw her shot smash off the crossbar.
But in the 34th minute, Spartans were given a glorious chance to open the scoring when they were awarded a penalty – but Alana Marshall saw her attempt impressively saved by Rangers’ keeper Claire Johnstone. Marshall had previously a 100% penalty conversion rate, having scored two this season.
Late on in the first half, Spartans had a couple of chances from set pieces but they failed to test the Rangers’ keeper.
The away side nearly took the lead early on in the second half when Bobby Beveridge saw her shot rattle the crossbar, and Rangers just about cleared the loose ball.
But then in the 70th minute, Rangers took the lead. Rhianna Tweedie’s cross picked out Lisa Swanson and she selflessly laid the ball to Megan Foley who blasted the ball into the net.
Rangers held on to record their second victory which sees them remain in fifth whilst Spartans drop down to fourth.
