For the third SWPL 1 match in a row, Glasgow City won by 1-0 – this time against Aberdeen.
The result does not tell the story of a game where the champions dominated but came up against an impressive rearguard display from Aberdeen.
And yet it was Aberdeen who had the first of note when Nikki Smith’s speculative long effort went wide.
But soon City started turning up the pressure. Fiona Brown’s volley was parried behind, and from that corner, Savannah McCarthy had her header cleared off the line by Rachel Small.
Jo Love could have opened the scoring, but her glancing header just went wide.
Superb play from Clare Shine created an opportunity for Brown, but she shot straight at the Aberdeen keeper Becky Flaherty.
Late on in the first half, McCarthy went close once again, this time, her header smashed off the crossbar.
Early on in the second half, Fiona Brown’s cross was deflected onto the post and then from the resulting corner, McCarthy saw her shot go just wide. Minutes later, Julie Fleeting had her shot saved.
But when Nicky Docherty’s long-range shot was deflected behind for a corner, City finally scored. The corner picked out Clare Shine and she headed the ball across the goal and beyond the keeper’s reach.
Late on, Shine, Fleeting and Love all had chances to extend City’s lead – but the champions picked up their third 1-0 win to move to the top of the SWPL 1.
