Aberdeen vs Spartans

There is added motivation for both sides in today’s League Cup Quarter-Final. Aberdeen is looking for revenge from the opening day defeat by the visitors whilst Spartans know the League Cup Semi-Finals and Final will be played at their stadium.

When the two teams met on the 13th March, it was Spartans who were victorious side as they won 2-1 – including Alana Marshall’s wonder goal.

Last Sunday, Aberdeen picked up their first point of the season as they battled to a 0-0 draw with one of the title favourites Hibernian. Whereas, Spartans continued their 100% start as they picked up a 3-1 victory over Forfar Farmington.

In the League Cup First Round, Spartans required extra-time to overcome Stirling University. After the scores were 1-1 after 90 minutes, Stirling had a goal ruled out minutes into extra-time. But as Stirling tired, Spartans made sure of progress by scoring four times to win 5-1.

Aberdeen played SWPL 2 side Jeanfield Swifts in the First Round, and for the first 37 minutes, they were being frustrated by a disciplined performance by the underdogs. But Aberdeen scored three quick goals before the half-time whistle, and early in the second half, they scored their fourth. And just before the final whistle, Aberdeen scored their fifth goal to secure their place in the Quarter-Finals.

The last time these two sides met in the League Cup in 2014, at the exact same ground and stage, it was Aberdeen who won 2-1.

Spartans have lifted the trophy, winning the 2006-07 Cup whilst Aberdeen has yet to win it although have appeared in the semi-final stage over the past two years.

Forfar Farmington vs Hibernian

Forfar will look to put behind a disappointing start to the league as they entertain Hibernian in the SWP League Cup Quarter-Final.

After beating Hearts 3-0 in the League Cup First Round, they have then gone on to lose their first two league games. First up was a 4-0 defeat to the predicted title dark horse Celtic, but it is harder to judge their second game, a 3-1 defeat to Spartans – partly because they had played over an hour with ten players soon after equalising.

Hibernian have had an unbeaten start to their campaign, although they have dropped points. In the League Cup First Round, they travelled to K-Park for a tricky away tie to Celtic and battled to a 1-0 win thanks to a wonder-strike from Lizzie Arnot. Their second game saw them travel up to Aberdeen and came away with a goalless draw.

In last season’s SWPL Cup, Forfar Farmington was banned due to failing to field a side in the 2013 competition. Hibernian, who have lifted the trophy three times, reached the final where they agonisingly lost 2-1 to Glasgow City after extra time.

Glasgow City vs Glasgow Girls

Today sees the League Cup holders Glasgow City face SWPL 2 side Glasgow Girls in the Quarter-Final, as the two sides meet for the first time ever.

Glasgow City has started the league with a 100% record, although their two wins over Stirling University and Celtic have been both hard-fought 1-0 wins.

Meanwhile, Glasgow Girls sit in sixth after two games. They lost their opening game against Hutchison Vale, although they had a chance to win it. When they were 2-1 down, they won a penalty and their opponents were reduced to ten players. But, they missed the penalty and they were punished by Hutchie who went on to score their third and crucial goal.

Things were different in the League Cup First Round when Glasgow Girls beat Hutchison Vale 3-1. And there was further symmetry as it was Glasgow Girls who a player sent off, as their keeper handled the ball outside the box in the 8th minute. In the second half, Hutchie took the lead, but inspired by Samantha McManus, Glasgow Girls battled back to win 3-1.

Glasgow City won their First Round tie with a comprehensive 14-0 win over SWPL 2 side Inverness City.
City has become synonymous with the SWP League Cup, lifting the trophy six times – including the last four. This is the first ever season Glasgow Girls have competed in the SWP League Cup.

Rangers vs Buchan Ladies

Once again, Rangers entertain a SWPL 2 club in their SWP League Cup Quarter-Final with Buchan making the long trip down to New Tinto Park.

In the First Round, Rangers defeated Hamilton 5-1 but began their league campaign with a disappointing 3-1 defeat away to Hibernian. But they bounced back last Sunday with an impressive 4-1 win over Stirling University and will look to continue this form in a tricky cup tie.

Buchan, one of two SWPL 2 clubs left in the draw, have had an unbeaten start to their season. Their First Round game saw them beat fellow SWPL 2 club Queen’s Park 7-1. And then, after drawing their opening league game against Hearts, they beat Hutchison Vale 3-0 last Sunday.

Last season, both sides were knocked out of their respective First Round ties: Rangers to Spartans in the SWP League Cup, and Buchan to Boroughmuir Thistle in the SWFL First Division Cup.
