SWPL 1 Fixtures

Stirling University vs Glasgow City

University of Stirling, 12:15pm

Stirling University starts their league campaign with the hardest fixture possible. However, there are two main positives. One, they start with a fixture under no pressure to win and two, although Glasgow City beat them 3-0 last season, Stirling caused them enough difficulties to believe an upset is possible. Glasgow City, on the other hand, are the favourites to win the league as they focus on winning an unprecedented tenth title in a row.

League Cup First Round Results:

  • Spartans 5-1 Stirling University (after extra time).
  • Glasgow City 14-0 Inverness City.

Spartans vs Aberdeen

Ainslie Park, Edinburgh, 1pm.

Spartans are under new management with Suzy Shepherd becoming the club’s player-manager. They have also seen a turnaround in players and will be looking to improve on their disappointing 2015. On the other hand, Aberdeen had a very good 2015, and if they can repeat their performances last season which saw them beat both Celtic and Hibernian 3-0, then they will be fighting towards the top. Last season, the first two league games between the sides were close with a 0-0 draw and a 2-1 Aberdeen win – but in the third match, Spartans surprised most as they beat Aberdeen 4-0.

League Cup First Round Results:

  • Spartans 5-1 Stirling University (after extra time).
  • Aberdeen 5-0 Jeanfield Swifts

Celtic vs Forfar Farmington

K-Park, East Kilbride, 2pm.

Due to the players they have signed, Celtic begin the season with the belief that they can challenge Hibernian and Glasgow City. If they are to do this, picking up wins against teams like Forfar Farmington will be crucial. Last season, Celtic beat Forfar 4-0 – but this was before Forfar’s massive turnaround in their form where they won ten of their last eleven matches. Forfar will feel confident in causing a possible upset, and whilst they may begin the season talked about as relegation candidates, they are more than capable of finishing high up the table.

League Cup First Round Results:

  • Hearts 0-3 Forfar Farmington.
  • Celtic 0-1 Hibernian

Hibernian vs Rangers

Albyn Park, Broxburn, 2pm.

Hibernian will know the importance of starting the league in winning ways as they aim to take the title whereas Rangers will be looking for revenge after last season when Hibernian beat them 9-0 in late October – as well as Hibs beating them in the other two league matches between the sides.

League Cup First Round Results:

  • Celtic 0-1 Hibernian.
  • Rangers 5-1 Hamilton.

SWPL 2 Fixtures

Glasgow Girls vs Hutchison Vale

Budhill Park, Glasgow, 12pm

Round Two in the back-to-back games between these two sides, after they met in the SWP League Cup First Round. Then, Glasgow City triumphed 3-1, fighting back from 1-0 down and playing with ten players for 80 minutes. Having won the First Division last season, Glasgow Girls will look to start their debut SWPL 2 season with a continuation of their title-winning form. Meanwhile, Hutchison Vale will be trying to forget their 2015 season and get back to winning ways.

The question is, will Glasgow Girls beat Hutchison Vale again – or will the two sides playing each other so quickly allow Hutchison Vale to exploit their weaknesses.

League Cup First Round Results:

  • Glasgow Girls 3-1 Hutchison Vale.

Inverness City vs Hamilton Academical.

Milbrun Academy, Inverness, 12:30pm

It is fair to say Inverness want to forget the 2015 season where they only picked up three points. Although, they may have aspirations of a top-half finish, their immediate ambition will be to return to winning games. Hamilton will also want to improve on last season, but with the transfers they’ve made, many people have made them title favourites. In 2015, Hamilton beat Inverness three times in the league, but each game was a close encounter.

League Cup First Round Results:

  • Glasgow City 14-0 Inverness City.
  • Rangers 5-1 Hamilton

Buchan Ladies vs Hearts

New Pitsligo, 2pm.

The First Division runners-up Buchan begin their league campaign at home as one of the favourites to win the SWPL 2. Buchan’s location may provide an advantage with many of the SWPL 2 based in the central belt – as it was last season where they lost only once at home in the league. Hearts were desperately unlucky to be relegated from the SWPL last season, having battled bravely and finishing 9th.

League Cup First Round Results:

  • Buchan 7-1 Queen’s Park.
  • Hearts 0-3 Forfar Farmington.

Jeanfield Swifts vs Queen’s Park

McDiarmid Park, Perth, 4pm.

This looks to be an epic battle between the sides that finished third and fourth in the 2015 First Division. In a highly competitive SWPL 2, both sides will want to start with a minimum of a point. The two games between the sides last season were high scoring, with Jeanfield winning 4-3 and Queen’s Park winning 3-1. There is a moment of history for the home side as they play their first ever game at McDiarmid Park.

League Cup First Round Results:

  • Aberdeen 5-0 Jeanfield Swifts.
  • Buchan 7-1 Queen’s Park.
